Q1 Is Temple Bar independent or is it part of a larger group?
A1   Temple Bar is an independent company with its own board of governing directors. However, it has subcontracted its fund management and marketing activities to Investec Asset Management, a leading City-based fund manager. The Savings Scheme is promoted by IAM, but is administered by Capita IRG Trustees Limited - who are known as the administrator.

Q2 How long has the existing Fund Manager been responsible for running the share portfolio?
A2   Alastair Mundy has been managing the Temple Bar portfolio since 2002. Alastair also manages several other Funds including the Investec UK Special Situations Fund, the Investec Cautious Managed Fund and the Investec Capital Accumulator Fund.

Q3 Who should I contact if I have a comment on the web site?
A3   This web site has been produced on Temple Bar's behalf by Investec Asset Management and we, Investec Asset Management, are responsible for the content. Please return to the home page and click on "Contact Us" if you wish to do so. The details of the administrator may also be found there.

Q4 How has Temple Bar performed relative to the Stockmarket this year?
A4   Click here to view our performance charts of the Temple Bar Investment Trust.

Q5 Temple Bar is principally invested in UK stocks. Shouldn't I be looking to diversify into global equity markets?
A5   It is certainly true that, in general, diversification is a good thing. However, what is appropriate for a particular investor will depend on their personal circumstances and we cannot, therefore, give specific advice. It is always worth remembering that most large UK companies trade around the world – indeed many make more of their profits offshore than in the UK – so even a 100% UK portfolio provides a measure of international exposure. Temple Bar does have the authority to invest up to 10% of the portfolio in listed international equities in developed economies.

Q6 Does the share price of Temple Bar move broadly in line with the FTSE 100 index?
A6   Yes. Many of Temple Bar's investments are FTSE 100 companies and investment outside the FTSE 100 is restricted to UK shares. However, it will not move exactly in line as Temple Bar is actively managed and the fund manager is seeking to outperform the FTSE for the long term. Temple Bar currently does borrow money in order to increase its investment in the stock market. This can help to increase the rate of growth of the fund but also cause losses to be magnified.

Q7 Temple Bar has performed well in the past, what is the future outlook?
A7   It is impossible to know exactly what the future holds. All that we can say with confidence is that, historically, the stockmarket has produced superior investment returns for long holding periods, by comparison with savings accounts and bond based investments. Though it's important to remember that your capital is at risk with a stock market based investment like Temple Bar, whereas it is not at risk with a savings account.

Q8 How risky is investing in Temple Bar Investment Trust ?
A8   Like any investment it is possible for the value of Temple Bar shares to fall. How much would depend on how far the broader UK market fell and the success or otherwise of the particular stocks held by Temple Bar. As a broad-based UK fund mainly investing in larger companies Temple Bar might be regarded as "medium" risk, in a range where gilts and corporate bonds would be "low" risk and international equities would be "high" risk.

Q9 How long should I hold my investment?
A9   When setting out on making an investment in the stockmarket we think that you should be thinking of holding on for at least five years. Shares can fall in value as well as rise, but historically have been the best long-term investments. So, it is probably true to say "the longer the better", but always remembering that it is possible to cash in your investment at any time.

Q10 What is the current discount/premium of the share price relative to the net asset value and how does this compare to the sector average?
A10   Please click on the "Fundamentals" button for a graph showing Temple Bar's current discount/premium by comparison with its history. Unfortunately we do not have real time data on the discount/premium by comparison with its sector.

Q11 Has the Temple Bar dividend increased over time?
A11   Yes. Please see our section on dividends for further information.

Q12 Can I buy Temple Bar shares through you or do I have to contact a broker?
A12   You can buy shares through the savings scheme. In fact, its purpose is to provide private investors with a low cost alternative to dealing through a broker. The cost saving is particularly helpful if one wishes to make regular investments of smaller amounts. The Temple Bar savings scheme also offers a free dividend re-investment scheme for investors aiming for capital growth.

Q13 Can I sell my holding in Temple Bar through your company?
A13   Yes if you hold Temple Bar through the Savings Scheme but not otherwise.

Q14 If I send my cheque for Temple Bar Savings Scheme, when will the money be invested?
A14   If you make a lump sum investment of £250 or more, dealing will normally take place on the day the application is made if received by 10am. Otherwise dealing will be on the following dealing day. For monthly savings plan investments of £50 or more, initial amounts received by the Friday in any week will normally be invested on the Wednesday of the following week. Subsequent monthly Direct Debit amounts will be deducted from your bank or building society account on or around the 15th day of each month and shares will normally be purchased by the 22nd day of the month. Please go to the “Downloads” page, click on the “Key Features” button and view the Savings Scheme Key Features for full details.

Q15 Does the Temple Bar Savings Scheme pay initial commission to Agents?
A15   An investor is free to agree to pay an initial charge of up to 3% which we will deduct from the subscription and pay to the agent. However, this payment is at the investor’s discretion and unless they indicate that they wish a commission to be paid no deduction will be made and no commission paid.

Q16 Can I speak to someone about my Temple Bar Savings Scheme?
A16   Yes, please call Investec Asset Management Investor Services on 0800 389 2299 who will be happy to help you.

Q17 How can I arrange to have my dividends reinvested?
A17   If you invest in Temple Bar through the Savings Scheme please write either to us or direct to the administrator.

Q18 Do you offer a share exchange facility and what is the cost of the scheme?
A18   No we do not offer a share exchange facility for Temple Bar.

Q19 Can I invest on behalf of my children/grandchildren and if so what are the tax implications?
A19   Yes. Just enter your name as the first holder and the child’s initials in the “Account Designation” box in section 1 of the Application Form. The title to an investment which is designated for a child remains with the adult making the investment. The investment remains part of the estate of the adult making the investment and they are liable for any income tax or capital gains tax payable. The adult retains flexibility to decide when the investment is transferred to the child although this cannot be done until the child is 18 years of age.
