Risks

Important to remember

It is important to remember that past performance should not be taken as a guide to the future and dividend growth is not guaranteed. In addition, the value of your shares in Temple Bar and the income from them can fall as well as rise and you may lose money.

Risk level
As a broad-based UK fund mainly investing in larger companies Temple Bar might be regarded as "medium" risk, in a range where gilts and corporate bonds would typically be "low" risk and equities would typically be "high" risk.

The main risks which we believe are faced by Temple Bar investors are as follows:

  • You are not certain to make a profit; you may lose money and you are not guaranteed to receive an income – your investment can go up or down.
  • The value of your Shares purchased and held through the Scheme depends upon any fluctuations in the price of those Shares on the London Stock Exchange which is outside the control of Temple Bar and Investec Asset Management Limited (‘the Investment Manager’).
  • The past performance of Temple Bar should not be taken as a guide to its future performance; the shares of a company that have performed well in the past may perform poorly in the future and vice-versa.
  • The Shares should be regarded as a long-term investment. Temple Bar can borrow, through loans or other facilities, additional money to invest, known as gearing. It increases the exposure of Temple Bar to markets above and beyond its total net asset value. Gearing can improve Temple Bar’s performance when it is doing well, while on the other hand if investments do not do so well, it can magnify losses.
  • A fall in the value of the Shares could be due to adverse market conditions and an increase in the discount at which the Shares trade by reference to their underlying net asset value. Temple Bar may from time to time invest a modest amount of its portfolio in overseas markets, in which case currency exchange rate movements may cause the value of your investment to fall as well as rise. In addition, some UK companies themselves invest or carry out a significant proportion of their business overseas. Some also pay dividends denominated in currencies other than Sterling, meaning that income received from such companies in the form of dividends may be adversely or positively impacted by currency exchange rate movements.
  • Generating the necessary level of income from investments to meet the costs and expenses incurred by Temple Bar (see further below section headed ‘How will charges and expenses affect my investment?’’) and to provide adequate reserves from which to base a sustainable programme of increasing dividend payments to shareholders in Temple Bar is subject to the risk that income received from investments in other companies fails to meet the level required.
  • The tax benefits detailed may vary between investors and may change in the future. Temple Bar may be required to disclose certain information to tax authorities under local laws.
  • At the discretion of the directors of Temple Bar, a proportion of its costs and expenses may be allocated to the capital account of Temple Bar which will constrain capital growth.
  • We recommend that you contact a financial adviser if you are in any doubt about the suitability of an investment in Temple Bar, or if you are not confident that you fully understand the risks involved, or if you require any advice in relation to an investment in the Scheme.
  • The Investment Manager does not, and will not, provide any investment advice or recommendations relating to the acquisition of Shares via the Scheme or otherwise. Accordingly, the Investment Manager makes no assessment or recommendation as to the suitability of any investment in the Scheme or the acquisition of Shares via the Scheme or otherwise.

Full details on risks are included in the Company’s latest annual report and accounts which can be viewed by clicking here.
